The Game Awards 2021 baru saja rampung diselenggarakan di Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, pada 9 Desember malam waktu setempat. Penghargaan game paling bergengsi ini dibawakan oleh Geoff Keighley, akhirnya diadakan secara tatap muka, dengan penonton di studio yang lebih terasa semaraknya.
Selain pengumuman pemenang game-game terbaik tahun ini, beberapa film dan serial antisipatif merilis trailer perdananya dalam Game Awards 2021, mulai dari “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” yang akan rilis pada 2022 mendatang, “Halo” series, dan “Nightmare Alley” karya sutradara Guillermo del Toro yang turut serta membacakan pemenang Best Art Direction untuk “Deathloop”.
Menjadi kandidat terkuat dan terpopuler tahun ini, Maggie Robertson keluar sebagai Best Performance melalui penampilannya dalam “Resident Evil Village” sebagai Lady Dimitrescu. “Final Fantasy XIV Online” menjadi game online yang mendominasi penghargaan Best Ongoing Game, mengalahkan “Apex Legends” dan “Genshin Impact” yang tak kalah populer di komunitas gamer tahun ini. Namun, “Genshin Impact” setidaknya menang dalam kategori Best Mobile Game.
“It Takes Two” dinobatkan sebagai Game of the Year, mengalahkan “Deathloop” yang cukup mendominasi kategori bergengsi dalam Game Awards 2021. “It Takes Two” merupakan multiplayer game dengan variasi stage yang kaya, diimbangi dengan narasi yang menyentuh tentang pasangan suami istri yang melakukan petualangan fantasi untuk menyelamatkan pernikahan mereka. Game dari Hazelight Studio ini juga menang dalam kategori Best Multiplayer Game dan Best Family Game.
